CREWING AND PACING
Crew and pacers can disqualify their runners if they do not follow these rules. Please make sure your crew and pacers have copies of the runner’s manual and understand the rules.
Crew and pacers must respect and follow the rules of the race, including following the instructions of the aid station captains at each aid station. Crew and pacers must always be respectful to the volunteers.
Pacers
Pacers are permitted and can be an important advantage for runners.
Runners do not need pacers, they are optional. Many runners successfully complete the race without any pacers or crew. Runners are responsible for their crew/pacers so choose wisely.
In general, all rules apply equally to the pacer as well as the runner.
Please have your pacer use one of our “pacer bibs” which should be picked up at race check in. We do not keep track of pacers, but the bibs help volunteers and race staff identify who is the pacer and the runner.
Pacers are allowed to start or finish pacing from designated Crew Access Pacer pick up aid stations only. You may not pick up a pacer at any other aid station, Pacers are not allowed to run from the start.
If pacers are unable to keep up with their runner for whatever reason, the pacer needs to stop at the next aid station. Runners may not abandon pacers on any section of the course. You must stay with your pacer until they are safely at an aid station. Please choose pacers carefully if you decide to have one.
What help can pacers provide runners?
The pacer’s role is to provide mental support and for runner safety.
There can be only one pacer per runner at any one time.
What must pacers do?
Pacers must also carry the same mandatory gear that is required for runners.
Pacers should also have GPX navigation capabilities for themselves.
Pacers must always wear a Pacer bib provided at runner check-in.
Pacers must always follow event staff instructions.
Pacers must always meet aid station cut-off times.
What can pacers not do?
The pacer cannot leave an aid station at a different time from their runner.
Pacers may not ‘mule’ their runner’s equipment, food or water.
Pacers cannot share their food and equipment with the runner.
Only active pacers wearing the pacer bib may consume aid station food and drinks.
Pacers must be on foot only – bikes or other mechanical assistance are not allowed
Pacers may access the course only at pacer access aid stations (see aid station tables above)
Pacers may not meet a runner between aid stations for pacing
Pacers unable to keep up with their runner must stop at the next aid station
Pacers may not sleep at aid stations – they must make their own sleeping arrangements with their crew.
Waste Management
Pacers and crew must follow Leave No Trace principles.
Pacers and crew must dispose of all their own trash and are not permitted to dispose of it at aid stations. Aid station trash receptacles are for event use only.
Aid Stations
Food and drinks at aid stations are for runners and pacers who are currently pacing only. Please make sure your crew has their own food and drinks in their vehicle.
Sleeping pads at sleeping stations are for race entrants only.
Pacers and crew may only assist runners at aid stations and give them food/drink within the designated area of the aid station.
Crew are only allowed at crew access aid stations. (see aid station tables above)
CREW VEHICLES
We will allow only one crew vehicle per runner.
Crew must drive within the speed limit and follow the rules of the road as well as parking rules. Crew, pacers and runners all represent the race organization – careless driving and parking can cause major permit problems and may result in us not being able to allow crew at aid stations.
Given the space limitations at designated aid stations, we are unable to accommodate excessively large vehicles. Please note therefore that RV’s or vehicles over 20’ long will not be allowed at any aid station and all vehicles should fit within a standard parking space.
Trailers are not permitted.
While several of the aid stations are remote, you will not need a vehicle with 4x4, to reach a Crew Access aid station.
We will be monitoring the flow of traffic at aid stations and all crew drivers will need to follow the instructions of aid station event staff. Designated parking zones will be clearly marked. If you illegally park or park poorly, you will be asked to move your vehicle. Failure to follow those instructions may lead to your runner being disqualified.
Your vehicle must be clearly identified as a crew vehicle with the bib number and name of your runner clearly visible. Please display the parking pass that we will give you at race check-in on the dashboard for all to see.
All crew should closely monitor their runner’s progress so that they arrive at any aid station no more than 30 minutes before the runner ETA. The crew and vehicle should depart from the aid station immediately after the runner has departed (remembering to collect the drop bag if the runner will not be returning to that aid station).
The runner may rest in their crew vehicle at a designated crew access aid station only.
Any crew that does not follow these rules risks disqualifying their runner.
