GENERAL RULES
The following Rules apply to all race distances. Breach of the Rules may result in disqualification.
Course Route
• Runners must follow the marked course.
• Runners must complete the entire course under their own power. They cannot obtain assistance from any mechanical device (such as a bike, car etc)
• No cutting of the course in any way
• Runners who correct course deviations within the given cutoffs will not be penalized. Runners must rejoin the course where they left it.
• Runners may not leave the course for any reason. The only exception is for a medical examination or if instructed by the Race Directors. If a runner leaves the course for an approved reason, they remain within the given cutoffs and are given the ok to continue running, they must return to the same point which they left the course to continue.
• The Organizers can amend the course as deemed necessary for runner safety, possibly even mid-race, due to weather or other conditions.
• Certain sections of the UTAH 115 course go through private property. Runners and crews should not trespass or impede the owners of any private property.
• Leave all gates as you found them. If a gate is closed, then close it after passing through. If a gate is open, then leave it open.
• Do not remove or alter course markings
Turnarounds
There will be unmanned turnaround points for the 115M and 50M distances. Runners will be required to take a selfie at those two locations to prove they have reached them. It is the runner's responsibility therefore to ensure they have a cell phone with a healthy battery.
Sportsmanship
• Trail running is a very collegiate sport. Poor sportsmanship is therefore likely to be penalized with disqualification.
Runner Gear
• Runners must carry their own mandatory and recommended gear during the run. No pacer or other runner may mule a runner’s gear.
Mandatory Gear
• Runners must be in possession of and always carry their mandatory gear.
• Mandatory gear checks will be conducted randomly during the event. If runners or pacers do not have mandatory gear, they will be required to obtain it before proceeding and may be penalized or even disqualified, depending on the severity of the omission.
• Runners who do not have the mandatory gear will be disqualified or given a time penalty
Personal Etiquette
• No littering at any time, including on the course, at aid stations and at Race HQ. Our permits require us to keep the course litter-free.
• Garbage and other waste may only be left in trash receptacles and must be carried by runners between aid stations.
• Crews must dispose of their own trash and not use receptacles at aid stations which are for official event, and runner use only. Crews must take away what they take into the event.
• You may not just do a #2 anywhere. We follow Leave No Trace Principles.
o Bury your #2 6" deep at a good distance from the trail. DO NOT LEAVE ANY WIPES/TISSUE. Bring extra baggies so that you can baggie your tissue and deliver it to aid stations for disposal. OR
o Use a portable toilet.
• Please use our portable toilets whenever possible.
Anyone who does not follow these rules will be disqualified.
If you allow your crew or pacer to breach these rules, you will be disqualified.
Medical Disqualification
• A runner requiring an IV during the event is automatically disqualified.
• A runner requiring the use of emergency medical service (EMS) (but not event medical staff) or search and rescue (SAR) is automatically disqualified.
• A runner refusing the advice of SAR or EMS is automatically disqualified.
No Smoking
Smoking and vaping are not allowed on the course, at aid stations or at Race HQ in Kanab.
Drugs
No performance enhancing drugs, alcohol or controlled substances are allowed on the course at any time.
Fellow Runners
Runners may assist other runners in distress, without penalty.
Crew Behavior
Runners are responsible and accountable for the conduct and behavior of their crews and pacers before, during and after the race.
Disqualification and Time Penalties
• The organization retains the right to either disqualify runners or apply time penalties where it is considered that a Rule has been breached. The organizers have the sole right to decide on the size of the time penalty in each case.
Did Not Finish (DNF)
A “DNF” will be given to any runner:
• Finishing after the cut off time for the whole race
• Who decides to leave the race before finishing the entire course
• Not meeting an aid station cut off time (Either not arriving before the aid station cut off time or not leaving the aid station before the cut off time)
• Returning to your crew at an aid station after the aid station cut off time
• Advised by the medical team or the Race Director that they may not continue due to a medical issue including but not limited to:
1. Any issue that requires hospitalization or is deemed as being serious enough to require hospitalization whether runner does indeed seek medical help
2. Medical issues may be physical and/or mental as a long endurance run like this can cause breakdown of both the body and the mind.
• Awards are only given to finishers within the course cut off time. DNF runners are not eligible for a finish line award (buckle or medal).
Dropping out of the race
All runners who wish to drop out must do so at the nearest aid station. Their crews may collect them, if the aid station is one designated for crew access. Otherwise, they will be transported off the course by an event vehicle, at the earliest possible opportunity, and taken to the nearest crew access aid station, to be collected by their crews or to Race HQ. Those without a crew will be transported back to Race HQ in Kanab at the earliest possible opportunity.
Disqualification
Disqualification is at the discretion of the Race Director and will be made after careful consideration. When signing up for the race, it is assumed that all runners and their crew have agreed to abide by the rules. Good behavior is required for the integrity of the event and permitting.
A runner may be disqualified, if they, their crew or pacer:
• Blatantly breaks any rule
• Breaks the law
• Endangers anyone during the race
• Endangers any third party or trail user
• Jeopardizes the event’s permitting
• Abuses any event staff
• Is found cheating
• Meets with their runner at any place on the course aside from a crew access aid station within the cut off time for that aid station
• A runner interacts with their crew before checking into an aid station or after checking out of an aid station
• Takes outside aid between aid stations
Mandatory Stops
Mandatory stops may be issued at any time due to weather conditions or other factors. You must stay at the aid station indicated as a mandatory stop for the full time indicated. Failure to do so will result in a time penalty. A time credit will be given for any runner subject to a mandatory stop.
Race directors’ decisions are final
The race directors have the final say on any issues that may arise, including issues not specifically listed as an official rule. The race directors also have the authority to make changes to any aspect of the race as deemed necessary or beneficial to the event. Aid station captains have the delegated authority to make decisions on behalf of the race directors.
